About MeMy name is Karen. I was born and raised in El Salvador as a missionary kid. Both of my parents had an Amish background, and grew up in Lancaster, PA before they moved to El Salvador. I was interested in pregnancy and childbirth for as long as I remember. My mom taught childbirth classes, and delivered many babies as a missionary nurse. Spanish was one of my first languages, and I should be learning Pennsylvania Dutch!
When I was 17, my sister-in-law invited me to attend the birth of her baby. It was a beautiful experience that I remember so well. The midwife even included me by asking me to hand her the scissors to cut the cord! Looking back, it seems like such a small thing, but I was so excited! That whole birth sparked even more interest in me.
I moved to Pennsylvania when I married my wonderful husband who grew up in Lancaster County. After being married almost three years, I got pregnant. I loved reading all I could about pregnancy and birth. I then had an amazing water birth at Birth Care Center in Georgetown. I had a great midwife, and a super nurse, who stayed with me long beyond what was required of her, when I was feeling really weak a few hours after birth. She also helped me get a good start with breastfeeding, and I was able to breastfeed my daughter till she was almost two.
I am currently in training to become a certified doula. I am enjoying learning about childbirth, and how to support women in labor.
Besides learning to become a doula, I enjoy spending time with my Heavenly Father, being a wife, being a mom to my three-year-old daughter, scrapbooking on my computer, reading, learning, and everything latino!
